Judy Schulman has been employed at UCSD for the past 20 years at the SOM Core Bio Services. She currently functions as their senior business manager.  She started doing pine needle basketry as a result of her volunteer work at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve where she has been a docent for the past 40 years. She has been doing award-winning basketry for 21 years.

She teaches an annual history class which at one time included a section on local Kumeyaay culture to new volunteers at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.  One year a Native American volunteer said that she would have more credibility with his people, as well as her own, if she just didn’t talk from books.  He suggested that she “learn the things that she was taking about.”  That is how she got started.  Her first class was at the now defunct UCSD Craft Center and has since taken classes with Native American basket weavers.
