Gifts from Donor Advised Funds, Private or Family Foundations, or IRA Distributions

When a payment is made through a donor-advised fund, private or family foundation, or an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD), applicable federal tax and charitable giving rules require that the payment be made without the donor, donor advisor, family members, or related parties receiving any goods, services, event attendance, memberships, sponsorship benefits, access privileges, or other benefits in return. These charitable giving vehicles may only be used to support fully charitable contributions. This is consistent with University gift acceptance guidance regarding donor-advised funds, private foundations, and quid pro quo contributions.

Accordingly, we are unable to accept a payment from a donor-advised fund, private or family foundation, or IRA qualified charitable distribution for any portion of a payment that includes donor benefits. We also cannot divide or allocate a payment between the charitable portion and the benefits portion. If donor benefits are included, the entire payment associated with those benefits must be made personally and cannot be paid, in whole or in part, through one of these charitable giving vehicles.

If a charitable contribution has already been made through one of these giving vehicles for a transaction that includes donor benefits, we can return the contribution to the donor-advised fund, private or family foundation, or IRA custodian so that it may be replaced with a personal payment.
