Advancement Services and UC San Diego Foundation
Advancement Services is responsible for providing service to Advancement and the entire campus for all matters of gift policy, processing, accounting, investing and stewardship. Advancement Services provides policy and legal gift documentation guidance; creates, maintains and reviews gift funds; processes and receipts all charitable gifts in accordance with IRS and UC policy; accounts for and invests charitable gifts; enters and records private support; and stewards donors and campus customers with gift data and fund balances.
Advancement Services is the operating office for the governance and corporate operations of the UC San Diego Foundation, a legally separate nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation. The Foundation is the public-facing, charitable arm of UC San Diego. The Foundation Board of Trustees consists of 50 prominent alumni, donor and community partners.

Foundation and Board Operations
The UC San Diego Foundation, the primary recipient of charitable gifts to UC San Diego, is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation (Tax ID #95-2872494) with over $1 billion in assets. The Trustees who serve on the Foundation Board are among the Chancellor’s closest advisors and are instrumental in supporting UC San Diego’s mission and philanthropic goals by raising and managing charitable gifts and as advocates and ambassadors for the university.

Foundation Investment Operations
UC San Diego Foundation Investment Operations manages and invests over $1 billion in assets, the largest pool of which is its endowment. Investment Operations analyzes, develops, recommends and implements the policies for endowment management under the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA); oversees the policies and management of expendable gift fund pools, charitable trusts and charitable gift annuities; and advises on complex gifts of securities and other financial assets.

Gift and Foundation Accounting
Gift and Foundation Accounting is responsible for the accurate and timely financial accounting of all charitable gifts given in support of UC San Diego to either The Regents of the University of California or the UC San Diego Foundation. The office provides services to the entire campus community in conjunction with general accounting; ensures compliance with applicable accounting and investment policies and generally accepted principles as stated under the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB); and maintains a separate ledger for the UC San Diego Foundation, which must issue separately audited financial statements annually.

Gift Policy Administration
Gift Policy Administration ensures that all gift-related documentation, solicitation materials, allocations and fund usage adhere to UC San Diego and University of California policies and procedures, as well as federal and state regulations. Primarily, Gift Policy Administration reviews and approves gift proposals, gift agreements, and other fundraising collateral for the solicitation and acceptance of gifts in support of UC San Diego to The Regents of the University of California and the UC San Diego Foundation.

Gift Services
Gift Services serves campus departments, Advancement and the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) as the delegated authority to accept, record and receipt all charitable contributions to the UC San Diego Foundation and to The Regents of the University of California for the benefit of UC San Diego. Gift Services establishes all gift funds and ensures the integrity of gift data recorded and stored in the donor database for the purpose of donor, departmental and institutional reporting.
