How to Publish Videos to a Media Gallery

There are several ways you can publish a video to a Canvas course's Media Gallery.

Kaltura offers users several different ways to make their videos appear in a course's Media Gallery. Each method is useful in particular circumstances. Though any method will work, below are some suggestions based on common use cases:

  • If you want to publish more than one video at a time to the same course(s), go with method 1 (publish from the list in "My Media").
  • If you're a member of a large number of courses in Canvas, go with method 4 (publish from the course's Media Gallery).

Method 1: Publish from the List in "My Media"

This method is particularly handy if you want to publish several videos at once to the same Media Gallery.

  1. Within Canvas, click "My Media" in the left navigation.
  2. Find the video you'd like to publish and click the checkbox on the left side of its row.

Note that you can click multiple checkboxes in "My Media" to publish more than one video at a time to a course.

  1. Scroll to the top of the screen and click "Actions."
  2. Select "Publish" from the list that appears.
  3. On the subsequent screen, if it's not already selected, click the radio button for "Published."
  4. After your list of courses populates below the radio buttons, check the box next to the course(s) where you'd like students to see the video.
  5. Click "Save."
Your video will now appear in the Media Gallery of the course(s) to which you published it.

Method 2: Publish from the Player Page

You can also publish a video from the page where you can watch the video, also known as the "player page." You'd get here if you found the video in your list in "My Media" and then clicked on it.

  1. Within Canvas, click "My Media" in the left navigation.
  2. Click on the title or thumbnail of the video you want to publish.
  3. On the video's details page, click "Actions" on the right side of the screen.
  4. Select "Publish" from the pull-down menu.
  5. Select the radio button for "Published."
  6. After your list of courses populates below the radio buttons, check the box next to the course(s) where you'd like students to see the video.
  7. Click "Save." Your video will now appear in the "Media Gallery" of the course(s) to which you published it.

Method 3: Publish from the Edit Page

When you click the pencil icon on a video in "My Media," you're brought to the "edit page." In addition to being able to perform a variety of edits on your video (see our tutorials on editing videos to learn more), you can also publish it from here as well.

  1. Within Canvas, click "My Media" in the left navigation.
  2. Find the video you'd like to publish and click the pencil icon on its row.
  3. Under the video preview, click the "Publish" tab.
  4. Select the radio button for "Published."
  5. After your list of courses populates below the radio buttons, check the box next to the course(s) where you'd like students to see the video.
  6. Click "Save." Your video will now appear in the "Media Gallery" of the course(s) to which you published it.

Method 4: Publish from a Media Gallery

This method can be particularly useful if you're struggling with the other methods because you're listed as the instructor on a ton of courses.

  1. Within Canvas, enter the course in question and click "Media Gallery" in the left navigation that appears.
  2. If you've created playlists for this course, be sure to select the "Media" tab at the top of the screen.
  3. Click the "Add Media" button.
  4. Click the checkboxes next to all the videos you want to add to this course's media gallery.
  5. Click "Publish" at the top right of the page.
