How to Add a YouTube Video to “My Media”

Interested in adding a YouTube video to "My Media?" Here’s how.

Kaltura allows users to add YouTube videos to their "My Media." While this doesn’t actually upload the video, it does allow you to keep the video in your library, so to speak.

What to Know About Adding YouTube Videos to "My Media"

  • No Kaltura machine captions are added. Because there/s no actual file added to "My Media," machine captions will not be requested for the YouTube video. You can, however, utilize whatever captions are available on YouTube.
  • No flavors are created. Similarly, because no file has been added, Kaltura won't generate multiple quality levels for the entry behind the scenes.
  • You can edit the title and description. Though Kaltura will paste what's in YouTube by default, you can change it.
  • You can't make cuts. You aren't able to use the editor to make any cuts to the video.
  • You can't download the video, or enable downloads.
  • In-video quizzes are possible. Interestingly, you can add in-video quiz questions to YouTube entries.

Whys, Requirements, Caveats

Why You Might Want to Add a YouTube Video to "My Media"

  • It's a handy way to "bookmark" a YouTube video that you intend to use in your Canvas course(s)
  • You can create your own description to show in the Media Gallery, providing the appropriate context for the video in your course(s)

Prerequisites

  • A public YouTube video URL (note that this method may work for "unlisted" videos in YouTube, though Kaltura claims not to support that)

Caveats

  • The video isn't actually "uploaded" to your library - it's more like it's been added as a library entry or reference
  • Some Kaltura features aren't available for YouTube videos added to Kaltura, such as machine captioning, making cuts using the video editor, downloading the video, or enabling downloads for others
  • Surprisingly, you ARE able to create in-video quizzes based on YouTube videos added to Kaltura

Instructions

Adding a YouTube video to "My Media" is simple.

  1. Copy the URL of the YouTube video you want to add to Kaltura.
  2. Within Canvas, click "My Media" in the left navigation.
  3. Click "Add New" and select "YouTube" from the menu.
  4. Paste the URL of the YouTube video you want to add in the text field and click "Preview." The page should repopulate with the video's information, and the video preview will likely autoplay.
  5. Edit any of the information that has auto-populated the page (such as name, description, and tags).

Tip: Consider Adding Tags

Within "My Media," Kaltura doesn't offer a folder-like organizational system. Instead, they offer "search and filter" functionality, like you may have seen in the GMail web application. For this reason, taking a moment to add a few tags to your video can be really helpful, particularly when your list of media in "My Media" is very long.

So consider developing a tagging system that will enable you in the future to easily find your media. For example, you might tag a video with english101 and fall2020 to make it easier to find later.

  1.  Click "Save" at the bottom of the page.

The YouTube video will now be an entry within "My Media."

When it comes to making it visible to your students, your options are largely the same as with any other video in "My Media": embedding it in a piece of instructional material or publishing it to a Media Gallery.
