Developing on the Job

  • Join a Toastmasters Club
  • Teach a course on a topic about which you know a lot
  • Teach a course on a topic about which you know little
  • Do something outside of your comfort zone
  • Conduct an icebreaker activity at a staff meeting
  • Make a presentation at a staff meeting
  • Learn about an unfamiliar topic, process, service or product and make a presentation
  • Train customers on how to use your unit’s services or products
  • Represent your unit at a campuswide event
  • Participate as a mentor in the Staff Mentorship Program
  • Learn more about adult learning theory

    • In partnership with the HR division of Equal Opportunity Services, we offer the Staff Mentorship Program.  The Staff Mentorship Program matches staff mentors and mentees based on their interests and experiences, and provides assistance with goal setting, job satisfaction, job enhancement and lateral or upward mobility.  Please call (858) 822-2633 for more information.
  • Feedback from Others (this will be expanded to explain how to get the feedback and how it can be used)
    • Seek feedback from professionals trained and certified in your area of development, your boss, direct reports, past associates or constituencies, internal and external customers, HR professionals, peers and colleagues
    • Seek feedback from a wide base of diverse constituencies and individuals
    • Hire a tutor or coach
    • Ask a trusted advisor to observe you training or making a presentation and ask them to give you feedback
