HR Succession Planning: Knowledge Management

Find out why knowledge management is critical to succession planning at UC San Diego.

Rollout LaborSoft System: The Vision (Desired Future State)

Knowledge management is the systematic process of capturing, storing, maintaining, and distributing information (know-how) in a way that facilitates achievement of an organization's mission. UC San Diego's goal is to create a model for department-level knowledge management that fosters:

  • Improving operating results (quality, cost, and timeliness)
  • Improving ability to collaborate with all stakeholders
  • Improving ability to maximize resource potential
  • Softening the impact of team member departures

The Challenge (Need for Change)

Currently, many campus departments face challenges that occur all too frequently, such as:

  • Corporate knowledge "walking out the door as people retire"
  • Inconsistent methods for providing services
  • Inconsistent business rules being applied by service providers
  • Long learning curves for people who are new to the organization
