César E. Chávez Celebration Award and Scholarship Recipients

Each year, the UC San Diego César E. Chávez Committee honors individuals for furthering Chávez’s ideals in their communities and awards scholarships to UC San Diego undergraduate essay contest winners.

Award Recipients

The UC San Diego César E. Chávez Awards recognize individuals who uphold the legacy of Chávez by giving back to the community and advocating for the rights of the voiceless and underserved.


UC San Diego Alumni Honoree

Selina Calvo Lugo, ‘08

Selina Calvo Lugo is a prolific community organizer, activist, artist and champion of social change. Her fierce commitment to extending the legacy of social change and service to others is evident in her work as co-founder/owner of Golondrina, co-founder of Project Reo, member of Made in Paradise Hills, and as a 2019 RISE San Diego Fellow.

Frances Contreras, Ph.D.
Associate Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Associate Professor, Department of Education Studies

Frances Contreras cares deeply about issues of equity, access and the academic success of Latinx, Chicanx and underrepresented students at UC San Diego. She pours her heart and soul into ensuring students have a sense of belonging and their contributions are valued. Contreras is a respected role model at the university and in our community.

Community Honoree

Chicano Park Steering Committee

Since 1970, the Chicano Park Steering Committee has worked tirelessly to serve the San Diego community by continuing the development and expansion of Chicano Park to be reflective of the Chicano, Mexicano and Indigenous communities. 

Established by Chicano activists on April 22, 1970, Chicano Park has received international recognition as a major public art site for its commanding mural paintings of Mexican and Chicano history. The Park was recognized as a San Diego Cultural Resource by the San Diego Historical Society in 1980. In addition, Chicano Park has been listed on the California Register of Historical Resources since 1997, on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and was designated a National Historic Landmark on December 23, 2016.

Student Scholarships

In honor of César E. Chávez, UC San Diego is offering scholarships to current students who can demonstrate contributions to equity and social justice at UC San Diego and contribute to positive change in the Latinx community.

The scholarship will be offering the following awards:

First Place: $2,500 
Second Place: $1,500 
Third Place: $750 
Fourth Place: $250
