Security controls are in place to prevent and reduce the risk of harm caused to UC San Diego's electronic communications resources by error, accident, natural disasters, or malicious action.

UC San Diego's goals for reducing risk to electronic resources are based on assessments of

  • How critical an electronic resource is to the university
  • The sensitivity of the data that resides in a particular electronic resource
  • The cost of preventive measures and security controls
  • The amount of risk that the university is willing to absorb
