What you do online matters in real life.

  • Don't post anything that reveals your identity to strangers, such as your real first and last name, phone number, address, IM screen name, passwords, financial information, the name of your school or workplace, or your specific whereabouts.
  • Think twice about posting photographs, as they make it easier for strangers to locate you. Also, make sure your friends have your permission before they post photos of you.
  • Don't use an e-mail address that incorporates your last name. Strangers can use your full name to track down where you live, work, or go to school.
  • Use caution when downloading anything from a Web site. In some cases, programs can invade your privacy by tracking what you're doing online.
  • Never reveal anything about other people (your family, friends, or coworkers) that could get them into trouble or compromise their privacy.
  • Consider making your profile "private." Some Web sites, like MySpace.com, offer this option.

Be especially careful in online chat rooms or forums.

  • Avoid chat rooms associated with groups that engage in dangerous behavior.
  • Ensure that others in the chat room do not divulge information about you, such as your real name.
  • Choose a gender-neutral name to use in a chat room. This will help prevent harassment.

Avoid face-to-face meetings with online acquaintances.

  • Remember that people are not always who they say they are.
  • If you must meet someone in person, do it in a public place, and bring someone you trust.

Report harassment, hate speech, and inappropriate content.

  • If you feel someone's behavior is inappropriate, report it to the webmaster, forum host, or authorities.
  • Never respond to comments or messages that are hostile, belligerent, inappropriate, or that make you feel uncomfortable in any way.

Don't post anything that might embarrass or compromise you later.

  • Never type anything online that you wouldn't say in public.
  • Think twice before posting a photo or information you wouldn't want your parents or boss to see.
  • Remember that anything you post may be used against you in a legal investigation.
