Setting Up a Firewall: Norton Internet Security for Macintosh OS X

Install the Norton Internet Security suite on your Macintosh OS X in order to protect your computer against malicious activity.
Note: Before you start installation, disable all existing firewalls on your machine, including the one included with Macintosh OS X. For a list of incoming ports required for the applications you use, visit Firewall Information and Setup for Advanced Users.

- Place the Norton Internet Security CD in the CD drive of your Macintosh.
- Find the "CD" icon on your desktop and double-click it.
- Double click Install for Mac OS X.
- Double click Install Internet Security.

- Depending on your system configuration, you may be required to enter your Macintosh password.
- The installer pane will come up and begin initializing. Click Continue if a pane opens with the message that a program must be run.
- At the "Important Information" pane, click Continue.
- At the "Software License Agreement" pane, click Continue.
- At the prompt, click Agree if you agree to the terms of the license and wish to continue the installation.
- When prompted, select which drive to install the software on (usually Macintosh OS X), and click Continue.

- When prompted, click Install to begin the installation. Depending on your system configuration, you may be required to enter your password.
- When the installation setup is complete, you will be asked if you want to run LiveUpdate. Click Yes.

- LiveUpdate will download and install the latest version of the Norton software.
- When LiveUpdate has finished, the installer will optimize your drive.
- Restart your computer when prompted.

- The LiveUpdate download must be run twice to ensure a complete update. After the restart, open your 'Applications" folder.
- Open the "Norton Solutions" folder.
- Double-click on the LiveUpdate program.
- Click Update Everything Now.
- LiveUpdate will list the updated software when the process has finished.
- Click Restart when prompted. The current version of Norton Internet Security is now installed on your Macintosh.

- Find the Norton icon in your menu bar at the top of your screen.
- Click it, select Norton Personal Firewall, and then select Open Norton Personal Firewall.
- If you have any shared applications open on your computer, you may be prompted to allow access by the "Setup Assistant" pane.
- To set or change the level of firewall protection, click on the Protection Settings button in the toolbar.

- Click the Custom Setup radio dial button and clear the Enable Stealth Mode check box.
- Click Save.

- Once you enable the firewall, the first time any program on your Macintosh attempts to access the network, you will be asked if you wish to allow the connection.

- A new pane will let you know your selection has been confirmed.

- Open Norton Personal Firewall.
- Expand the pane by clicking the arrow next to "Service settings."
- In the "Protect these Internet services" section of the pane, use the scroll bar to find the rule you want to change. Click on it.
- Click on Incoming or Outgoing, on the right side of the pane, to set the direction of network traffic.
- Use the drop-down menu under the "Incoming/ Outgoing" buttons to change access settings.
- Close the pane to save your changes.

- If you have trouble using a particular piece of software on the Internet, try disabling the firewall temporarily.
- Open the Norton menu, select Norton Personal Firewall, and then select Disable Firewall.
- To re-enable the firewall, open the Norton menu, select Norton Personal Firewall, and select Enable Firewall.
