Setting Up a Firewall: McAfee Internet Security 6.0 for Windows - Advanced

1. Begin creating exceptions for certain applications.

  • Start in the "Security Center" window with the "Personal Firewall Plus" tab active.
  • Click the View the Internet Applications List icon.

2. Choose listed applications.

  • Select the Internet Applications tab.
  • If your application is listed:
    • Quit the application.
    • Click the entry in the list to select it.
    • Under the "Change Permission to..." heading, select Outbound Access Only.
    • Restart the application.
    • If it doesn't work, change the "Change Permission to..." setting to "Allow Full Access."
    • Close the window to save your changes.
    Windows XP and 2000 only: If application doesn't work, continue to step 4 and configure the exception by port number.

3. Add unlisted applications.

  • Choose a Privacy Service Password at the prompt.
  • If your application is not listed:
    • Quit the application.
    • Click on New Allowed Application.
    • Use the "Select Application to Allow" window to find the application on your computer.
    • Under the "Change Permission to..." heading, select Outbound Access Only.
    • Restart the application.
    • If it doesn't work, change the "Change Permission to..." setting to "Allow Full Access."
    • Close the window to save your changes.
    Windows XP and 2000 only: If the application doesn't work, continue to step 4 and configure the exception by port number.

4. Enable or disable ports (Windows XP and 2000 only — not possible with Windows 98).

  • In the "Security Center" window, click the Personal Firewall Plus tab.
  • Click the Utilities icon.

5. Select System Services.

  • Under the "Tools" heading, click the System Services icon.

6. Find listed and unlisted applications.

  • If your application is listed:
    • Check the box for it in the list.
    • Click OK to close the window and save your changes.
  • If your application is not listed:
    • Quit the application.
    • Click Add.

7. Add applications.

  • In the "Add" window, enter the application name and port number(s). Click here for a list of common applications and their ports.
  • Click OK to close each window and save your changes.

8. Allow or block connections from Local Area Networks (LANs) or specific computers.

  • By default, the firewall blocks incoming connections. Follow these instructions to authorize access and/ or connections from your home or office network:
    • In the "Security Center" window, click the Personal Firewall Plus tab.
    • Click the Utilities icon.

9. Add trusted IPs.

  • Under the "Tools" heading, click the Trusted & Banned IPs icon.

10. Allow or block LAN connections.

  • Allow incoming network connections:
    • Select the Trusted IP Addresses tab.
    • Check the My Local Area Network (LAN) box.
    • Click OK to close the window and save your changes.
  • Block incoming network connections:
    • Select the Trusted IP Addresses tab.
    • Make sure the My Local Area Network (LAN) box is not checked.
    • Click OK to close the window and save your changes.

11. Allow or block connections from specific computers.

  • Allow specific connections:
    • Select the Trusted IP Addresses tab.
    • Click Add.
    • Enter the IP addresses you are allowing through the firewall.
    • Click OK to close the window and save your changes.
  • Block specific connections:
    • Select the Banned IP Addresses tab.
    • Click Add.
    • Enter the IP addresses you wish to block.
    • Click OK to close the window and save your changes.
