Radio Overview

Learn about UCSD's radio system, a key component of campus emergency-response capabilities.

UCSD uses Motorola 800 MHz Smartnet II Plus trunked radio technology, which offers many sophisticated communications features:

  • Interaction with radio systems used by the San Diego Police and Fire Departments, and California Law Enforcement
  • Interoperability with other UC campuses
  • Easy communications between University departments because the radios are programmed to connect with all talk groups on campus, such as physical plant, housing, parking, and shuttle
  • Option to add channels, talk groups, radios, and features, without affecting radios in the field
  • Specialized paging, telephone interconnect, and private call options

Radio users are organized by talk groups. The radios are customized to a specific group and can be programmed to reach all the necessary groups within a department.

Currently available models include the handhelds XTS 2500 (PDF) and XTS 5000 (PDF), and Astro XTL 5000 mobile, and the Motorola Two-Way Talkabout.

The monthly equipment and maintenance charge for radios is $24.35. This is in addition to the one-time cost of the radio and software.
