If you are using a wireless program other than the built-in Windows wireless software, configure it to use Wi-Fi Protected Access-Enterprise (WPA-E) at UCSD.

1. Download the UC San Diego root certificate.

  • Connect to UCSD's unencrypted wireless network or a wired connection.
  • Click here to download the UCSD root certificate.
  • When prompted, click save file. The certificate will download to your default location (usually your desktop).

2. Install the certificate.

  • Double-click the UCSDCA-ROOT certificate file icon on your desktop (or default save directory) to install the certificate. If Certificate opens, click Install Certificate.
  • Certificate Import Wizard will open automatically. Click Next.
  • Select Automatically select the certificate store based on the type of certificate.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Finish, OK, OK to complete installation. If asked whether you wish to install the certificate, click Yes.

3. Find the third-party software on your PC.

  • Click the Start menu, and navigate to All Programs.
  • Locate the software for your wireless card (the name will probably contain the word "wireless") and click to open.

Note: Your screens for configuring properties for WPA-E will vary depending on the software, but use similar terms and field names for the settings.

4. Configure wireless properties.

  • Select the following settings:
    • General settings:
      • Wireless network name (SSID): UCSD-Protected
    • Security settings:
      • Network Authentication: WPA (or WPA Enterprise)
      • Data Encryption: TKIP
      • Select Enable 802.1x
      • Authentication (EAP) type: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • EAP-MSCHAP v2 properties:
      • User credentials (possible choices):
        • Prompt each time I connect, or
        • Uncheck "Automatically use my Windows login name and password"
      • Username: Enter your Active Directory username
      • Password: Enter your Active Directory password
      • Domain: Leave blank
    • PEAP server properties:
      • Allow Intermediate Certificates: Leave blank
  • Follow your software instructions to initiate wireless connections.
