Configuring Mac OS X 10.4.x to 10.6.x to Use Encrypted (WPA-E) Wireless Services at UCSD

Learn how to download the security certificate and configure your Mac OS X 10.4.x to 10.6.x machine to use Wi-Fi Protected Access-Enterprise (WPA-E) at UCSD.

Notes:

  • To determine which version of OS X you have, click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner, then click "About This Mac."
  • All patches must be installed, including all Airport patches.  Run Software Update from the Apple menu to patch.

Expand all

1. Download the certificate.

  • Connect to the old "UCSD" wireless network,  UCSD-GUEST, or a wired connection.
  • If you use Firefox, download the UCSD root certificate, and save the file to a location on your computer.
  • If you use Safari, control-click to download the UCSD root certificate, select Download Linked File As..., and select a location on your computer.

2. Install the certificate.

  • Double-click the UCSDCA-ROOT.cer certificate file icon on your desktop (or from your default save directory) to install the certificate.
  • Keychain Access will open. When asked if you want to add the certificate to a keychain for 10.5.x and 106.x., select either:
    • login (this user only), or
    • System (any user of this Mac). Select this option only if you have administrator privileges on this machine.
  • Keychain access for 10.4.x. Select either:
    • login (this user only), or
    • X509Anchors (any user of this Mac). Select this option only if you have administrator privileges on this machine.

3. Confirm installation in Keychain Access.

  • If Keychain Access screen asks for your Mac OS X password, enter it and click OK.
  • When asked "Do you want your computer to trust certificates signed by 'UC San Diego Certificate Service' from now on?", click Always Trust.
  • Enter your Mac OS X password again when prompted.
  • Quit Keychain Access to complete certificate installation.
  • If you have 10.5.x or 10.6.x, skip to step 5. If you have 10.4.x, proceed to step 4.

4. Confirm certificate settings for OS X 10.4.x.

  • Verify that all your certificate settings have Always Trust selected.
  • Click Go, click Utilities, then double-click Keychain Access.
  • Double-click the UC San Diego Certificate Service (most likely found near the bottom of the list).
  • Click the arrow next to Details if needed, then click the arrow next to Trust Settings to expand it.
  • Verify that all settings, especially "When using this certificate:" are set to Always Trust.
  • Close the certificate and Keychain Access windows.

5. Configure your Mac to use the encrypted wireless service.

  • Click the AirPort symbol at the top right of your screen.
  • Look for "UCSD-PROTECTED," but don't select it. If you see this network option, you will be able to use encrypted wireless in this area.
  • Select Join Other Network... from the drop-down menu.

6. Configure the UCSD-PROTECTED option.

  • Enter UCSD-PROTECTED for the Network Name.
  • Set Security to WPA2 Enterprise.
  • Enter your Active Directory username and password for User Name and Password.
  • For Snow Leopard (10.6.x), set the 802.1X field to Automatic.. For Leopard, set it to WPA: UCSD-PROTECTED.
  • Click Join.

7. Enter your password when prompted.

  • If prompted for your username and password to access the UCSD encrypted service, enter your Active Directory username and password. Leave "Only use this password once" blank.

8. Save the service to your preferred networks.

  • Click the Apple symbol at the top left of your screen and select System Preferences.
  • Click Network. Click AirPort in the left pane, then click Advanced.
  • Click the Airport tab.
  • Drag UCSD-PROTECTED to the top of the list.
  • Click OK, click Apply, and then close System Preferences.

9. Troubleshoot problems.

  • It may be necessary to turn your Airport off and back on again in order to detect UCSD-PROTECTED.
