You must secure access to the ACT mainframe by configuring your software to use a protocol for protecting data.

If you have TN3270 software from Brown University on your Macintosh computer with Operating System X, choose the appropriate instructions:

  • TN3270 3.1.1 or greater: You don't need Stunnel, but you must complete a special setup procedure:
    • Open TN3270 and close any default window that comes up.
    • Click File, New Session
    • Enter the host name, hubble.ucsd.edu
    • Enter the window title, adcom
    • Click the Special box
      • Enter Port: 1023 and Security: SSL
      • Select SSL/ TLS Default
    • Close Special
    • Click Open Connection, verify the connection works, then save a settings file.
    • Overwrite the old file to eliminate any confusion.
  • TN3270 3.0 or earlier: Follow the steps below.

Expand all

1. Install Stunnel.

  • Start the SSL Enabler download, which will place a new icon on your desktop and will open the Download Manager window.
  • Close the Download Manager window.

2. Mount the file.

  • Go to the desktop.
  • Double-click SSLEnabler.dmg. The Disk Copy will mount the file on your desktop.
  • Double-click the new SSL Enabler icon (not the dmg file) on your desktop to open the SSL Enabler window.
  • Single-click the SSL Enabler application showing in the window and drag it to your Applications folder.

3. Change the configuration.

  • Follow these steps:
    1. Double-click SSL Enabler in the Applications folder to open the SSL Connection Configuration window.
    2. Click the Authentication button (lock icon) on the bottom left side.
    3. Type the username and password, then click OK. The Authentication button should now read "Authenticated."
    4. Click the Add button. The default list should look similar to this: 9999, enter host here, 9999.
    5. Double-click the first field (local port). It will be highlighted in blue. Delete 9999 (or whatever is showing) and replace it with 23.
    6. Double-click the Remote Server IP field and replace the information with hubble.ucsd.edu.
    7. Edit the Remote Port field and enter 1023.
    8. Click the Save button. The reconfiguration is complete.
    9. Quit the SSL Enabler.

Note: You must have ADMIN access to change the configuration. If you don’t have ADMIN access, contact your desktop support technician.

4. Modify TN3270 for Mac OS X from Brown University.

  • Start TN3270.
  • Enter 127.0.0.1 as the hostname.
  • Click Open Connection.
  • Click File at the top and Save Default Settings. The Save Host Name box must be checked (window position is optional).
  • Click OK.
  • You now have a secure connection. Future access will automatically use the secure protocol.
