How to Access Newsgroups: Outlook Express 5 and 6 (Win 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP)

Use this step-by-step guide to access and subscribe to newsgroups via Outlook Express 5 or 6 (Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, XP).

Note: Internet newsgroups are accessed through the UCSD USENet news server. In order to use the UCSD news service, you will need to be connected to the Internet through the UCSD network via an on-campus ethernet connection or the UCSD VPN service.

1. Configure Outlook Express to access newsgroups.

  • Open Outlook Express.
  • Click Accounts from the "Tools" pull-down menu. In the "Internet Accounts" window, click Add, then News.
  • In the "Display Name" box, type the name you want other people to see when you post a message, then click Next.
  • In the "E-mail Address" box, type the e-mail address for the account you are using (e.g., gbluefin@ucsd.edu), then click Next.
  • In the "News (NNTP) Server" box, type news.ucsd.edu. Click Next. Click the Next button on the "Congratulations" screen, then click Finished.
  • Click the Close button. You can now begin to use Newsgroups.

2. Subscribe to newsgroups.

  • Select News from the "Go" pull-down menu.
  • If you have not already subscribed to any newsgroups, you are prompted to view a list of newsgroups. Click Yes.
  • If you have already downloaded the list of newsgroups, you can view them by selecting Newsgroups from the "Tools" pull-down menu.
  • Click on a newsgroup in the list of newsgroups, then click Subscribe.

Note: To search for a specific newsgroup, type a word or part of a newsgroup name in the "Display Newsgroups Which Contain" box.
