Learn more about UC San Diego's conversion to a biweekly payroll cycle for non-exempt employees, which will occur on November 20, 2016.
The United States Department of Labor (DOL) has approved a change in the federal Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) that will significantly increase the number of UC employees eligible for overtime pay, effective December 1, 2016. The revised rule increases the minimum salary threshold for exempt employees from $455/week (approximately $23,660/year) to $913/week (approximately $47,476/year). In additions, the DOL is mandating subsequent increases in the minimum salary threshold every three years, with the first increase occuring on Janualy 1, 2020, the DOL estimates the minimum salary will be approximately $51,168/year.
The transition to non-exempt biweekly will take place on November 20, 2016, the start of the pay cycle covering December 1, 2016.
Employees on the biweekly pay cycle will be paid every other week on Wednesday. The first biweekly pay date will be December 14, 2016.
Some advantages of bi-weekly pay include:
- Biweekly employees will receive minimum 26 paychecks in a year, whereas monthly employees receive 12 paychecks in a year
- Paychecks will be more frequent and represent actual time worked in the pay period
- The biweekly employee pay rate will be an hourly rate
- Deductions will be split across bi-weekly pay periods
