Telecommunications Strategic Plan: Overview

The main themes of the UCSD Telecommunications Strategic Plan are:

  • UCSD is growing dramatically. We are also seeing a higher density of telecom connections and more reliance on telecom services. Our networks will need to become much larger, with a continued emphasis on reliability and redundancy.
  • Wireless is an area of great growth and change. It has become a defining service for UCSD, and the next few years will bring new opportunities for integrating wireless into our data and voice services. Our goal to have seamless interoperability between UCSD’s networks and the wider area public networks.
  • As our data networks grow, we will use new technologies to provide higher speed links with an emphasis on burst mode performance. We will also set up more security controls in the network layer, and integrate and support the high speed research network initiatives at UCSD.
  • There are now new options for providing voice services. The Ericsson system will become more like a data network, based on distributed servers communicating via IP, and providing better integration with wireless services. Long-distance rates will continue to drop and we may move toward a flat-rate toll charge.
  • New technologies mean that our telecommunications closets are becomming more complex, with increasing requirements for space, power, grounding, and clean air.
