ITLC Report, September 2004

The September 2004 UCSD report to the ITLC (Information Technology Leadership Council) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past several months. For more information, please click the Technology tab at the top of this page.

Computing

  • Student portal: Work on TritonLink, the UCSD Student Portal, is progressing with the first phase projected to be available in Spring 2005.
  • Single Sign-On: Work on the second phase of the campus Single Sign-On system is nearing completion, adding the ability to authenticate affiliates and manage roles.
  • Network security: A minimum standards policy was issued, requiring all devices connected to the UCSD network to deploy host firewalls and virus protection software. The effective date for compliance is December 31, 2004.
  • Computer security: All Business Affairs units are substantially enhancing computer security and privacy with a consistent state-of-the-art multi-layered approach.
  • PPS: The UCSD Payroll/Personnel system was successfully migrated and has been operated by UCOP since June 2004.
  • Upgrade: A mainframe upgrade, necessary to meet usage growth, doubled the CPU capacity.
  • Student enrollment: Remote incoming student enrollment was successfully completed.
  • Express Card: ECManager, an online tool for managing Express Card accounts, is now in use.
  • MyTravel: The Society of Collegiate Travel Management named UCSD's MyTravel as its Travel Innovation of the Year.
  • e-Forms: A new e-Forms project will use Adobe Forms Manager software.
  • Computer upgrades: Three hundred out of 1600 instructional computers were upgraded or replaced over the summer.

Communications

  • Telecom planning: The UCSD Telecommunications Strategic Plan is complete and now available.
  • Telephone rates: The new long distance phone rates are substantially less than before.
  • PBX upgrade: The UCSD phone PBX now successfully peers with the SIPphone network.
  • Campus backbone: Work on a 10gb campus backbone network is progressing via funding partnerships among several campus units.
  • Network connections: Connections to the CENIC DCP, HPR, and ISP networks are complete.
  • Storage access: A WebDAV service, based on Apache tools and developed at the University of Calgary, provides access to instructional storage devices.
  • Resource assessment: The CINFO system was enhanced to better gather and report the information needed to allocate instructional computing resources in labs and servers.
