Computing

  • Blink: We continue to enhance Blink. Latest activities include new Buying and Finance content, Google Search Appliance, upgrade to Vignette V/6, and usability studies.
  • Electronic Payments: An RFP for outsourcing electronic payments was issued and a vendor will be selected soon. Initial services will include electronic checks. We may add credit card payments in a later phase.
  • Student Registration Status: A Web-based student registration verification system is in place. We are no longer using stickers on student ID cards to verify enrollment.
  • Computer Applications Guidelines: The ACT Policy Committee approved the UCSD guidelines for IS-3 and IS-10 implementation.
  • Personal Web Sites: Faculty and staff can now add a personal Web site address to their directory listings.
  • Online Hours Extended: Expanded hours offer users increased access to online mainframe systems. Minimum availability is 7 a.m. to midnight.
  • Dashboard: We're developing a faculty dashboard that will let faculty graphically view their financial, personnel, and student information.
  • Overdraft: The Overdraft system is now in beta testing.
  • PWRuP Project: The PWRuP pilot project (statistically-based ledger reconciliation) was successfully completed and we are now planning rollouts to other departments.

Communications

  • Wireless: The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding, with coverage now available in most populous campus locations and classrooms. A project involving 802.11b equipped PDAs is continuing this year with 300 new students receiving these devices.
  • ONI: The fiber run for one of our two connections to ONI is complete. The other will be finished soon. Electronics to make these connections functional are on order.
  • HPR Connectivity: We are evaluating a proposal from Juniper for a new router to give us connectivity to the HPR.
  • Anti Virus: Virus scanning of virtually all e-mail traffic started at the beginning of the summer. This has nearly eliminated infections of campus machines.
  • Software Evaluations: We are beginning several software evaluation projects: (1) Shibboleth - we've acquired a server on which to test this I2 software; (2) VPN remote access - evaluating a donated piece of equipment from CISCO; and (3) SPAM rating - evaluating various tools to add a rating to e-mail that would allow end users to filter messages with a high likelihood of being spam.
  • DSL: We're looking into establishing a DSL program as part of a project to lower the cost of the numerous T1 and PRI lines serving the campus. Three customers are piloting now. Issues we must resolve involve billing and scheduling of installation in the customer's residence.
  • IP Phones: We installed and successfully tested a few Ericsson IP phones.
