JOG Report, September 2001

This is the September 2001 UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG). The following paragraphs summarize key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.

Computing

  • The campus financial system (IFIS) was successfully converted from IDMS to DB2. The conversion of the student system (ISIS) is scheduled for December, 2001.
  • Blink has become the home page of choice for many campus users. Recent enhancements include MyBlink, two new tabs (Travel and Research), new headers, and emergency support. The Human Resources and the Computing & Telecom Web sites were permanently shut down and all their content is now available in Blink.
  • A new dynamic adhoc query system was added to FinancialLink, EmployeeLink, and DataLink. The system is a Java/XML enhancement to UCI's Bliss (thank you), and it has been enthusiastically accepted.
  • Student photographs are now available on StudentLink for faculty view of class rosters.
  • PDA download from StudentLink is available to students (personal schedules, news). The system uses the AvantGo mobile channel technology.
  • Recharge uploads to the financial system from the Storehouse and the Bookstore are now performed on a daily basis, with dynamic drill downs from FinancialLink.
  • An innovative transaction sampling process is being developed to reduce financial reconciliation workload.
  • COEUS was implemented and is used by central campus units.

Communications

  • The new communications funding model was successfully implemented in July. So far so good.
  • The residence halls network was upgraded with Cisco’s DOCSIS cable modems and a packet shaping system, providing better performance and improved controls.
  • The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding, with coverage now available in many campus locations.
  • Sales of cellular phones transferred from Telecom to the Bookstore.
  • Network security audit conducted by UCSD's internal audit unit and a consultant. It was useful in stimulating discussion and allowing the staff responsible for network security to explain the issues to the auditors.
  • A campus-wide Active Directory was deployed, with about fifteen campus units joining either the production or the test forest at this point.
  • Contracted with a local ISP, XO Communications, to provide backup and local connectivity.
  • A Web mail service was deployed (acs-webmail.ucsd.edu). It uses the Endymion Sake Mail product and can be used with any UCSD POP or IMAP mail system.
