JOG Report, September 1999

This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.

Computing

  • With the latest FinancialLink enhancements departmental staff can execute all their financial transactions (e.g., requisitions) and work with payroll projections directly from their Web browser.
  • UCSD won the first prize of the 1999 NACUBO Higher Education Award Program for the development and implementation of the Link Family systems.
  • FOCUS support was discontinued and all its databases and programs were successfully migrated or eliminated.
  • Hardware for the Web, and database Sun UltraSparc servers were upgraded as usage continues to increase dramatically.
  • Changes to the mainframe password process address Y2K issues and allow better user control of password selection.
  • Blink, a new multi-year initiative, was recently launched to create a customer driven Web-based environment that will integrate all UCSD business processes, policies, training, practices, and systems.

Communications

  • The Telecommunications Strategic Plan was completed.
  • A new webcast service provides campus units with streaming audio and video services via the Internet. Current content includes numerous cultural, scientific, and medical programs, along with various UCSD events and a live video feed from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
  • The area code for most campus phone numbers changed on June 12 from 619 to 858.
  • An 800 MHz repeater was installed on a second site in order to provide emergency backup capabilities.
  • We anticipate 4,500 initial takers out of a possible 5,500 students in our Residence Hall Network.
  • A proxy facility for CDL and other UC and UCSD proprietary content will be announced soon. It is based on a feature of the 'squid' Web cache produced by NLANR (at SDSC). With this a UCSD affiliate who is in a non-UCSD network can access the content once they provide a username/ password.
  • We are talking to various local providers about DSL and creating a local exchange arrangement so that customers can use UCSD as the ISP. The goal is to add DSL as an option to our fee-for-service dial-in facility before June.
  • Enhancements were made to the equipment that provides centralized e-mail support.
  • The Bob security exploit was plaguing the campus earlier in the summer, with many Solaris and SGI systems compromised. We have a policy that lets us take a problematic system off the network and have used it frequently to deal with this problem.
