The May 2003 UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please click the Technology tab at the top of this page.
Computing
- Blink: We continue to enhance Blink. Most tabs are now fully populated with content. New personalization/ customization features include 10-second polls, ability to have personal “sticky notes” on any Blink page, get automatic notifications on any change to specified Blink pages, etc.
- MyDashboard: With the new MyDashboard tool faculty and staff can create their own digital dashboard with charts and graphs. The system also includes collaboration facilities, so users can share their charts and reports with others.
- e-Check: An electronic payment system (e-Check) was introduced and used by many students.
- Overdraft system: The Overdraft system is in use, and training is available for the campus.
- PWRuP: Campuswide rollout of the PWRuP system (statistically-based ledger reconciliation) is in process.
- Budget cuts: In a preemptive response to the upcoming budget cuts, the campus launched eleven tiger teams, charged with implementing rapid process redesigns in areas such as travel, HR, paper reduction, accelerated system rollouts, etc.
- FinancialLink: FinancialLink users can now drill down to images of invoices directly from the financial reports.
- Income tax: UCSD partnered with Intuit so employees who use TurboTax for their 2002 income tax reporting can get W2 data electronically.
- Sharecase 2003: Sharecase 2003 was a huge success featuring 99 sessions, over 50 exhibit hall booths, 1,800 attendees(including visitors from many UC campuses and other universities), and a colorful Hawaiian theme.
Communications
- Next Generation Network: The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding, with coverage now available in most populous campus locations (outdoors and indoors) and classrooms.
- ONI: The fiber run for ONI is complete and a new Juniper T320 was purchased and installed. We are expecting CENIC to turn on the network in June.
- Wireless authentication: We deployed a new authentication system in our wireless network. The system, from Vernier, replaces a home grown DHCP based system.
- Cisco VPN Device: We introduced a Cisco VPN device to ease the pain of a campuswide block on certain problematic ports, such as those used for Windows file sharing.
- Spam: Our central e-mail servers are filtering messages with SpamAssassin (SA). SA adds headers to each e-mail, rating the probability that the item may be spam. The customer creates a filter to handle the spam.
- DSL: Our campus-provided DSL service is moving forward and we have a few beta customers.
- Shibboleth test: A Shibboleth test bed is in service and we're working with the Library to test it.
- Reverse 911 system: A Reverse 911 system was purchased and is now in use.
