Computing

  • Blink: Blink has become the home page of choice for many campus users. Recent enhancements include several new myBlink features and a lot of new content.
  • Sharecase: Sharecase 2002 was very successful with 1,700 attendees, 96 sessions, and about 75 visitors from other UC campuses.
  • Passwords: Mainframe passwords no longer expire automatically, providing our users with an almost single sign-on capability among central administrative computing systems.
  • IS-10: UCSD implementation guidelines for the IS-10 policy were finalized and approved.
  • Online Admission Status: Within a couple of days 16,000 undergraduate applicants checked their admission status on StudentLink. This is the first year where admission status was published online before the students received the paper notifications.
  • Business Applications: A new policy regarding the integration of business applications into Blink was prepared. To assist in that process, we are enhancing our jLink framework to fully support Web Services.
  • QueryLink: QueryLink is continuously being enhanced with many new queries and features. New features include the ability to create charts and Excel Pivot Tables directly from a query and the ability to specify rolling/ symbolic dates (e.g., current month, last 3 months, last fiscal year). Several new queries were added, including a very popular Accounts Receivable Aging query.
  • AccessLink: AccessLink now highlights separated employees who still have access. This new feature helped the Departmental Security Administrators in cleaning and updating the access that their staff has.

Communications

  • UCSD network: The UCSD network now supports a fully deployed Gigabit Ethernet backbone.
  • Wireless: The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding, with coverage now available in many campus locations. We will have wireless capability in all general use classrooms by June 1, 2002 thanks to a donation of access points via Cal(IT)2.
  • Cyber Shuttle: The UCSD Cyber Shuttle was announced and deployed. While passengers on this shuttle bus travel between the campus and the Sorrento Valley train station, they can access the Internet at 2.4 mbps using combined the 3G (1xEV-DO) and 802.11b technologies.
  • ONI: Last mile connectivity to ONI is being implemented.
  • Anti Virus: We have deployed central virus scanning of e-mail using a daemonized version of the Sophos SAVI tool following a successful pilot that scanned student e-mail.
  • Wireless Management: We are looking into a new centralized management facility for our wireless network. Our current scheme using RADIUS and Cisco IOS tools does not scale well. We are currently evaluating a product from Vernier Networks.
  • Phone switch: The operating system of our Ericsson phone switch was upgraded to the BC-11 version.
