This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.
Computing
- Launch of the Blink project and the first prototype were successful. The Blink team was formed and StoryServer, a content management software from Vignette Corporation, was purchased. Products and features completed include the overall concept and visual presentation, the UCSD Directory, a new Title and Pay Plan process, and various levels of presentation of University business procedures. Blink Content coordination and development is underway with Human Resources, including classification, hiring, and Title and Pay data processes.
- Sharecase2000 was a major success with over 1,200 attendees visiting a large exhibit hall and attending many lectures. Some of the sessions are available for webcast video viewing.
- The core financial and student systems (IFIS and ISIS) are undergoing a major overhaul as we convert their IDMS database to DB2. The project started in February 2000 and will be completed by Summer 2001.
- ASUCSD elections were conducted online for the first time via a new feature in StudentLink. Use of StudentLink on the first day of Spring quarter established an all-time high record, with over a million hits in a single day!
- Five primary financial transaction services, now fully available in FinancialLink, include Journal Vouchers, Transfer of Funds, Department Orders, Requisitions, and Pay Authorization.
- AccessLink, the new member of the Link Family, was launched in March, providing Departmental Security Administrators with a consolidated Web-based environment for managing their activities.
Communications
- The new proposal for a campus-wide communications funding model was presented to the Academic Senate leadership and campus executives. The model is focused on a single communication user fee for both voice and data services and is tentatively scheduled for release in Fall 2000.
- Don McLaughlin was hired as the new Telecom Operations Manager. Don returned to UCSD after ten years of exile at UCI :)
- A campus-wide wireless data workgroup was established to develop policies and begin implementation of wireless initiatives.
- We are blocking access to the central Napster directory on residence hall subnets. Other similar services have cropped up but are not so easy to block. To deal with them we are relying on Netflow logging to identify heavy users with subsequent traffic shaping applied to those ports.
- Gigabit Ethernet is being implemented in some locations but is not yet installed on the campus backbone.
- We are evaluating various open source Web mail products.
- Many UCSD-TV programs are now available for webcast viewing. As part of a series of upgrades to the webcast service, we are now also providing the live UCTV webcast feed.
