This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.
Computing
- Sharecase99, a campus-wide technology conference, was held on March 24. Over 1,000 people attended the event which featured many presentations and exhibits on the use and implementation of information technology at UCSD. A short film about this successful event is available for viewing via a webcast server.
- The UCSD Business Affairs senior management team won the RIT/ USA TODAY Quality Cup award for its innovative approach to cutting costs, solving problems, and increasing efficiency.
- Enhancements to StudentLink allow recently admitted students to apply for residence hall housing.
- With the new online transactions feature in FinancialLink authorized staff can prepare Journal Vouchers and Transfer of Funds directly from their Web browser.
- Release 2.1 of EmployeeLink offers numerous new features, including searching and displaying employee records by many different criteria and keywords.
- A disaster recovery plan for Administrative Computing and Telecommunications was completed and tested. The plan is distributed to all key people via a special CD-Rom.
- Updated PC and Mac recommended specs for administrative computing purposes were recently communicated to the campus community.
Communications
- ACT is now beta testing a webcast service designed to support the growing campus demand for streaming audio and video via the Internet. Current content includes several UCSD-TV programs and a live video feed from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
- Attacks on UNIX systems, particularly Linux systems, continue to plague the campus. We've had a rash of Solaris-related attacks as well. The ISS security scanning tool will be used as soon as our new network security position is filled.
- We are evaluating software to provide a proxy or reverse-proxy facility to deal with affiliated users wanting access to protected content from non-UCSD IP numbers. We hope to make a selection of software by mid-summer.
- The area code for most campus phone numbers will change on June 12 from 619 to 858.
