This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.
Organizational Issues
- Charlotte Klock was hired as the new Administrative Computing Data Center Director.
- Various campus units participated in an all-day technology showcase. The presentations and booth exhibits demonstrated the significant impact of information technology on teaching, research, and administration.
Administrative Computing Applications
- Development of FinancialLink and EmployeeLink, campus-wide Web-based applications, is completed. They are based on a similar look and feel to our Link Family products. TravelLink and the Cost-Sharing system are nearing completion as well.
- Work on the authentication project is progressing. A UCSD LDAP directory is now being tested and the campus-wide workgroup report was approved for implemenation.
Communications
- Central support for cc:Mail will be discontinued on July 1, 1998.
- Another building was added to the network for instructional computing labs. This isolates about 40 labs with 800 stations from the main campus network. The goal is to isolate the traffic and improve security and performance.
- Spam has caused both central support units and departmental managers a lot of trouble lately. Most groups are taking steps to restrict the relay function so those not physically on the campus network can't use it. The other problem has been that spammers have been sending mail to campus mailing lists. Most of these lists are now restricted, usually by preventing those outside the campus net from sending to the list.
- ATM deployment is proceeding even though we have yet to implement a cost recovery system for supporting it. A lot of hard work has gone into a financial model and it will also be used to recover various outside network provider costs.
- The Faculty Workstation Project will spend $100K to upgrade/ replace more faculty desktop systems this year. Faculty are all in the arts and humanities this time.
