JOG Report, January 2002

This is the January 2002 UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG). The following paragraphs summarize key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.

Computing

  • Migration to DB2: UCSD is IDMS-free! All UCSD core systems were successfully migrated from IDMS to DB2. The financial system (IFIS) was converted in September, and the student system (ISIS) was converted in December 2001, concluding this two-year highly complex project.
  • Blink: Blink is now the home page of choice for many campus users. Recent enhancements include a fully populated Travel tab, New Employee checklists, and several new myBlink features. A live demo of the new features will be presented at the JOG meeting.
  • Query system: A new web-based Java/ XML query system was added to FinancialLink, EmployeeLink, and StudentLink. The system has been enthusiastically accepted by the users and is heavily used. A live demo of this system will be presented at the JOG meeting.
  • Mainframe upgrade: The administrative computing mainframe was upgraded in December in order to support the significant growth in system usage.
  • Transaction sampling: We are beta testing a new innovative transaction sampling process (called PWRuP). Instead of the traditional 100% reconciliation requirement, the system provides users with random samples of financial transactions that need to be reviewed. A live demo of this system will be presented at the JOG meeting.
  • Mainframe security: RACF was successfully installed as the mainframe security system, replacing Top Secret. This will help us get closer to a single signon environment.
  • Login system: A new Java-based login middleware system was implemented as another step toward a single signon environment.

Communications

  • Next Generation Network: We continue to be pleased with the roll out of our Next Generation Network program. The funding model is working very well and, perhaps most importantly, has been well accepted by the community. The funding stream has provided the resources for us to upgrade many buildings that would formerly be "have not" sites.
  • Wireless: The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding, with coverage now available in many campus locations.
  • HDR technology: UCSD and Qualcomm are continuing the beta testing of the HDR technology. As part of this project, we have successfully combined the HDR and 802.11b technologies. A live demo of this technology will be presented at the JOG meeting.
  • Network security: An internal audit of our network security was completed. The primary issues identified pertained to establishment of local security policies, and coordination of the many independent departmental computing support units.
  • Security scanner: We are beta testing a NetFox security scanning device and are running it in parallel with a software based scanner from ISS.
