This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarize key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.
Computing
- Blink beta version was released for initial campus testing. This site features a full content development section for Blink partners, content search, glossary search, staff Directory search, student Directory search, alphabetical index, business service topic navigation, user feedback on each page, access to information about the content contributor/ expert and their organization, and informational news on the home page and main business service pages. The site also features a nearly complete set of support pages for the most often requested information on "People"-related topics. Content development will fully shift to the Technology tab at the end of this quarter. Preliminary work started with Business and Financial Services units Purchasing and Travel and Disbursements, along with Extramural Funds and Contracts and Grants.
- Sharecase 2001 will be held on March 28.
- Significant milestones were achieved in the conversion of our core financial and student systems (IFIS and ISIS) from IDMS database to DB2/CICS. The project started in February 2000 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2001 (a delay of a few months).
- The Degree Audit system and classroom technology attributes were added to StudentLink. Student photos in class rosters will be added shortly.
- A new release of DataLink, version 2.0, was implemented. DataLink no longer requires clients to have extensive knowledge of where data is housed. The new approach is flatter, streamlined, and more intuitive. Added functionality includes sampling or viewing data from DataLink. New statistical (table size and access frequency) information provided internally lets us better monitor the overall environment.
- The UCML Conference was successfully supported by an internally developed Web site. This Java-based system provides a comprehensive conference Web site, where visitors can register for the conference, see information concerning sessions, keynotes, customize schedules, attendees, accommodations, and more. A Palm Pilot Beaming Kiosk contained conference information, schedule, and daily updates for conference participants.
Communications
- UC external auditors (PWC) endorsed the proposal for a campus-wide communications funding model. The model focuses on a single communication user fee for both voice and data services and is scheduled to be implemented in July 2001.
- Temporary campus funding was approved and allocated in order to get started with Next Generation Network enhancements during the current fiscal year. To that end, we completed a survey of all of the campus buildings, and prepared a list of campus buildings most in need of data upgrades.
- As part of the continuing project to install wireless LANs in public areas, networks were installed in several campus locations, including dining facilities, student meeting places, and some key buildings. More networks are currently being installed and will include large classrooms, conference areas, the Faculty Club, and various dining facilities around the campus.
- The HDR testing agreement between Qualcomm and UCSD was approved and signed. Equipment is being installed and the test network is expected to be operational in February 2001. HDR is a high-speed, high-capacity wireless technology providing transmission speeds up to 2.4 Mbps. Qualcomm will provide us with several portable HDR modems (WASP) that will be used by selected faculty, staff, and students for testing and evaluating the technology. The primary UCSD departments involved in this project are ACT, School of Engineering, Cal-IT2, SDSC, Academic Computing Services (ACS), and the Library.
- Gigabit Ethernet is being implemented in some locations and will soon be installed on the campus backbone. As part of this project, we recently purchased high-end Juniper and Cisco equipment.
- Many UCSD-TV programs are now available for webcast viewing. As part of a series of upgrades to the webcast service, we are now also providing the live UCTV webcast feed.
- A Web-based Telecommunications Recharge Inquiry process is in production. Users can look up all Telecommunications-related charges by entering various selection criteria such as phone number, name of user, financial account numbers, date ranges, etc.
- After a long recruiting process, we've recently hired a campus network security coordinator.
