JOG Report, January 2000

This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.

Computing

  • Y2K transition was smooth and uneventful.
  • Significant enhancements to FinancialLink include system tune-up for improved response time, expanded drill-down access to payroll expense data, improved transfer of fund features, and additional reports.
  • StudentLink's new features include a student voting module, dynamic link from course information to bookstore database, and enhanced performance. Usage of StudentLink on the first day of Winter quarter established an all-time high record, with 61,000 logins in a single day!
  • With the Java-based component in EmployeeLink 100% of campus timekeeping is now done on the Web.
  • The core financial and student systems (IFIS and ISIS) will be undergoing a major overhaul over the next couple of years, as their IDMS database is converted to DB2. The project is scheduled to start in February 2000 and be complete by Summer 2001.
  • A project to develop campus visitor kiosks was launched. The system will be based on Lexitech's NetKey technology.
  • MIT's COEUS system is being implemented at UCSD's Office of Contracts and Grants Administration. The system is currently being adjusted to meet the campus needs.

Communications

  • The new proposal for a campus-wide communications funding model was presented to campus executives. The model is focused on a single communication user fee for both voice and data services.
  • The proxy facility set up to provide UCSD network access to remote users was very well received. It's based on the Squid Web cache server from NLANR.
  • A mutual assistance agreement was established among UCI, SDSU, and UCSD for PBX and network support.
  • Web-based e-mail systems are being tested. No clear choice has emerged. We hope to deploy one during the summer.
  • We started to deploy Gigabit Ethernet links. At the moment, all of these links connect SDSC to various campus research groups.
  • UCSD customers of DSL providers are beginning to emerge. One local company has a presence in the San Diego NAP, which we're connected to, and provides pass-through service to UCSD.
  • The Bitek system was implemented for PBX Call Accounting.
