JOG Report, January 1998

This UCSD report to the UC-wide Joint Operations Group (JOG) and to the Communications Planning Group (CPG) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past four months. For more information please refer to the Blink Technology pages.

Organizational Issues

  • UCSD filled the following Vice Chancellor positions over the past few months: Vice Chancellors for Academic Affairs, Marine Sciences, and Development.
  • ACT is currently recruiting for three key management positions: Director of Telecommunications, Director of Data Center, and Manager for Online Guidelines.
  • Recharge desktop computer support (Mac and Wintel) was consolidated in one unit. The two large computer and network support groups are working toward a user support structure that will deliver "one stop" help even though the units are still separate organizations.

Administrative Computing Applications

  • Development of several campus-wide Web-based applications is nearing completion. They are all using a similar look and feel to our Link Family products.
  • The pilot phase of the authentication project is scheduled for April 1998. A campus-wide workgroup was established to address overall policy and administrative issues involved in the implementation of digital certificates.

Telecommunications

  • We are now running K56flex modems in our fee-for-service modem pool. We have more than 4000 active users (half are students) of this pool which contains over 400 modem equivalents.
  • The residential cable modem service is very popular. We have 3,290 customers out of a possible 5,500. About a quarter of the customers required some help with installation or had post-installation trouble, mostly due to problems with the student's own equipment.
  • A funding model for the campus next generation network is being developed with the goal of establishing a campus agreement on the issue this year.
  • Although the funding model is not completed, we are already deploying ATM switches which are funded by various units. We'll have eight switches in place by March 1998. We don't yet have the key components needed to create a redundant ATM backbone, and are working on a plan to create one.
