The February 2004 UCSD report to the ITLC (Information Technology Leadership Council) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past several months. For more information please click the Technology tab at the top of this page.
Computing
- Student portal: We received approval of funding for a student portal. It will use Vignette’s portal and CMS, and will use Blink and StudentLink as its foundation. Students will be able to use the first phase in Winter, 2005.
- Student admissions: Newly admitted UCSD students will receive electronic admit packets starting this year.
- Identity protection: UCSD Financial and Student systems were modified to conform to identity theft legislations (i.e., SSN). Campus ID cards are being modified to remove SSN from the magnetic stripe.
- MyServices: MyTravel and MyApprovals systems are now in use by pilot departments.
- Single Sign-On: A major enhancement to the campus Single Sign-On system is the self-service automated password reset function. This feature saves a lot of time for both users and security administrators.
- Security responsibilities: A notice on "Your Responsibility for Securing Private Information" was distributed to all UCSD faculty and staff.
- Online directory: The campus directory now includes a new field that displays the Assistants for faculty and staff. It is especially useful for scheduling meetings and contacting busy faculty and managers.
- Visitor information: Visitor kiosks were installed at the campus information booths.
- PPS: UCOP will operate the UCSD Payroll/Personnel System as of May, 2004.
- Sharecase: Sharecase 2004 will be on March 24. All ITLC members and their key staff are invited.
Communications
- Wireless: The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding (700 centrally managed access points), with coverage now available in most populous campus locations and classrooms.
- Shibboleth: A Shibboleth pilot is actively authorizing with JSTOR and Scientific American. We expect to add more vendors in the next few months, and hope for a campus rollout in six months. Kerberos name mappings were added to the active directory database, enabling interoperability between these two authentication systems.
- Juniper network: The Juniper T320 was upgraded with software that allows it to be partitioned into virtual routers. This is one of the final steps needed to share this router between the campus and SDSC.
- CENIC network: Several research groups are pursuing 10gb connections with partners on the CENIC network.
- Searching the UCSD Web site: A Google search engine was acquired for improved searches via the main campus Web page.
- E-mail notices: We're using a new system to send campus e-mail notices faster.
- Firewalls: We're exploring Checkpoint and Cisco firewall options.
- Safety surveillance: A wireless video surveillance system for campus parking lots is being implemented.
- Long distance: Switching long distance carriers from AT&T to SBC, yielded an overall saving of about 17%.
