The April 2004 UCSD report to the ITLC (Information Technology Leadership Council) summarizes key computing and communications issues for the past several months. For more information, please click the Technology tab at the top of this page.

Computing

  • Student portal: We have begun work on the student portal. The first phase will be available to students in spring 2005.
  • Student admissions: Starting this year, newly admitted UCSD students received electronic admit packets and can pay online.
  • Sharecase: Sharecase 2004 was a resounding success, with over 2,000 attendees.
  • Single Sign-On: Work on the second phase of the campus Single Sign-On system is in progress. It will add the ability to authenticate affiliates and will also include a Roles subsystem.
  • Security responsibilities: The ACTPC security subcommittee is finalizing new draft policies and procedures that will mandate the use of firewalls and virus protection software.
  • PPS: The UCSD Payroll/ Personnel System will be operated by UCOP by the end of May 2004.
  • UC Federated Identity Project: A Shibboleth origin was set up and work is in progress on the UC Federated Identity Project, which will allow our users to access UCFY and AYS services via the UCSD Single Sign-On system.
  • Data Warehouse: Academic Personnel data and Contracts and Grants award data are now available on the campus data warehouse.
  • MyTraining: MyTraining allows all campus users to view a history of their training. Supervisors can view the training history of their staff.
  • Blink Newsletter: BlinkBuzz is a biweekly e-mail bulletin that contains news and links to all new content.
  • Upgrades: We received approval to spend $500,000 on instructional computing lab upgrades.

Communications

  • Wireless: The 802.11b wireless network is continuously expanding (900-plus centrally managed access points and 2,000 simultaneous users during peak hours), with coverage now available in most populous campus locations and classrooms. We upgraded to the Vernier access control software for the wireless network.
  • Juniper network: The Juniper T320 is now fully operational.
  • Authentication: We completed the linkage between the Kerberos and Active Directory authentication systems.
  • Campus backbone: We are starting to work on 10gb in campus backbone and to selected research projects. Of particular interest is the coordination of 10gb to CENIC and Abilene to minimize fragmentation of resources.
  • Summer projects: This summer we will begin to experiment with:
    • IPv6 address management and other IPv6 middleware services
    • Updating the Squid proxy server to a new version
    • Real Netdisco implementation for network device identification
    • Use of an IGP instead of Cicso's proprietary EIGRP
    • Further deployment of Shibboleth for use with Library licensed content
    • An ACL Management
  • Bandwidth: We are evaluating network traffic management tools for more effective and friendly control of ISP bandwidth for the general campus.
