Find out how to borrow a radiation survey meter while yours is being calibrated, repaired, or shipped.
If you are a UCSD researcher, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) will lend you a radiation survey meter when:
- The EH&S Services Lab is calibrating your meter
- You send your meter out for repair
- You're waiting for delivery of a new meter
The loaner meter is the Ludlum model 3 meter with the following available probes:
- 44-3 scintillation probe for low-energy gamma detection
- 44-9 Geiger-Mueller probe for alpha, beta, or gamma contamination
Loaner meters are free but are subject to overdue charges:
- An overdue charge of $60 per month will apply beginning one month after you have been notified that your regular meter is available for pickup.
- Overdue charges will not apply if you have ordered a new meter that takes longer than 1 month to arrive.
To obtain a loaner meter:
- Call the EH&S Services Lab, (858) 534-6418, to be sure a meter is available. Meters are loaned on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Pick up the meter at the EH&S Services Lab, 301B University Center, at the corner of Gilman Drive and Myers Drive.
- Bring the following information with you:
- Principal investigator's name
- RUA number
- Index number for your regular meter
