Laser Accident Emergency Procedures

Learn what to do in the event of a laser accident.

Print the Emergency Procedures: Laser Accidents Poster (PDF) and post it near laser equipment.

1. Shut down the laser system.

Turn off the power source.

2. Provide medical assistance.

  • Eye injuries:
    • Keep the injured person's head upright and still to restrict any bleeding in the eye.
    • Immediately contact Shiley Eye Center at (858) 534-6290 and follow their instructions.
    • After business hours, contact the emergency room:
      • On campus:
        Thornton Hospital Emergency/ Urgent Care Unit, (858) 657-7600
      • Medical Center at Hillcrest:
        Emergency room, (619) 543-6400
  • Non-eye injuries:
    • Proceed directly to the emergency room:
      • UCSD Medical Center at Hillcrest
      • Thornton Hospital

3. Contact UCSD Police for assistance, if necessary.

  • From a land line: Dial 9-1-1
  • From a cell phone: (858) 534-4357 (534-HELP)

4. Report the accident as soon as possible.

  • Report to:
    • Environment, Health and Safety, (858) 822-2850 or 822-2494
    • Your principal investigator
    • Your Area Safety Coordinator
  • Preserve the accident scene for investigation by the Laser Safety Officer.

5. File an Incident Report.

Follow incident reporting instructions on What to Do if a Work-Related Injury, Illness, or Exposure Occurs.
