Parking: Where and When to Park

Where and When to Park

Find out where and when you can park with your permit.

If you plan to park at UCSD, you must display a valid parking permit, pay a parking meter, or pay upon exit at our gate-arm facilities during these hours, year-round:

  • Main campus — 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays
  • Scripps Institution of Oceanography — 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., 7 days a week
  • Medical Center Hillcrest — 24 hours/ 7 days a week
  • Medical Center La Jolla — 24 hours/ 7 days a week
  • No parking fee is required in some locations during late nights, weekends, and all day on holidays. See the free parking section below for details.

A: Annual, Limited, Occasional Use, or Alternative Schedule A permits

A properly dated A permit provides parking in the following spaces:

  • A 24/7 (reserved faculty): 24 hours daily (look for posted signs: “A permit required 24 hours a day/7 days a week”)
  • A: 24 hours daily (look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground)
  • B: 24 hours daily (look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground)
  • S: 24 hours daily (look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground)
  • R: by permission only, 24 hours daily (look for a "Reserved ###" sign and matching stencil on the ground)
  • Meters (with no fee): 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
  • V: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted white squares with a black V on the ground)

Notes:

  • You need an access stamp or sticker for SIO lots P001–P010 (see "Lots That Require an Access Sticker" below).
  • You need an access card for the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine lot P384.
  • Alternate Schedule permits limit parking to 3 days of your choice.

B: Annual, Limited, Occasional Use, or Alternative Schedule B permits

A properly dated B permit provides parking in the following spaces:

  • B: 24 hours daily (look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground)
  • S: 24 hours daily (look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground)
  • A: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.weekdays; all day on weekends
    • Look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground.
    • Not valid where posted “A permit required 24 hours a day/7 days a week.”
  • Meters (with no fee): 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
  • V: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted white squares with a black V on the ground)

Notes:

  • You need an access stamp or sticker for SIO lots P001–P010 (see "Lots That Require an Access Sticker" below).
  • You need an access card for the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine lot P384.

A valid Off Peak annual permit provides parking weekdays and all day on weekends in the following spaces

  • S: 2:30 p.m. – 9 a.m. (look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground)
  • B: 2:30 p.m. – 9 a.m. (look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground)
  • A: 4:30 p.m. – 9 a.m.
    • Look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground.
    • Not valid where posted “A permit required 24 hours a day/7 days a week.”
  • Meters (with no fee) and V spaces: 4:30 p.m. – 9 a.m.

Notes:

  • You need an access stamp or sticker for SIO lots P001–P010 and P354 (see "Lots That Require an Access Sticker" below).
  • You need an access card for the Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine lot P384.

Night/ Weekend

A valid Night/ Weekend permit provides parking weekdays and all day on weekends in the following spaces:

  • S: 3 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground)
  • A: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
    • Look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground.
    • Not valid where posted “A permit required 24 hours a day/7 days a week.”
  • B: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground)
  • Meters (with no fee) and V spaces: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

1 Day

A properly dated 1 Day permit provides parking for up to 24 hours in the following spaces:

  • S: 24 hours (look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground)
  • B: 24 hours (look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground)
  • A: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
    • Look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground)
    • Not valid where posted "A permit required 24 hours a day/7 days a week."
  • V: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted white squares with a black V on the ground.
  • Meters (with no fee): 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

  • The 1 Day permit is only available through departmental recharge.
  • You need an access stamp or sticker for SIO lots P001–P010 and P354 (see "Lots That Require an Access Sticker" below).

1 Night

A properly dated 1 Night permit lets you park for 1 evening in the following spaces:

  • S: 3 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground)
  • B: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground)
  • A: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.
    • Look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground.
    • Not valid where posted “A permit required 24 hours a day/7 days a week” 
  • V: 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m. (look for painted white squares with a black V on the ground)
  • Meters (with no fee): 4:30 p.m. – 7:30 a.m.

Pay Station permits

Note: Pay station permits bought outside Gilman Parking Structure are never valid for any space inside Gilman Parking Structure.

Pay Station permits (not including those sold inside Gilman Parking Structure):

A properly dated permit purchased from any pay station (except inside Gilman Parking Structure; see below) provides parking for campus visitors in the following spaces:

  • V: 24 hours daily
    • Look for painted white squares with a black V on the ground.
    • Never valid in Gilman Parking Structure V spaces
  • B: 24 hours daily
    • Look for painted green squares with a white B on the ground.
    • Never valid in Gilman Parking Structure B spaces
  • S: 24 hours daily
    • Look for painted yellow squares with a black S on the ground.
  • A: 4:30 p.m. – 7:45 a.m.
    • Look for painted red squares with a white A on the ground.
    • Not valid where posted “A permit required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week” and never valid in Gilman Parking Structure A spaces.
  • Meters (with no fee): 4:30 p.m. – 7:45 a.m.

Pay Station permits sold inside Gilman Parking Structure:

A properly dated permit purchased from a pay station inside the Gilman Parking Structure allow parking in the following spaces:

  • Inside Gilman Parking Structure (Note: no parking allowed inside structure 2–5 a.m.)
    • V (levels 1–3) 
    • A and B (levels 4–6) after 4:30 p.m.
  • Outside Gilman Parking Structure
    • V
    • S
    • B
    • A: 4:30 p.m. – 7:45 a.m.
      • Note: Not valid where posted “A permit required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”
    • Meters (with no fee): 4:30 p.m. – 7:45 a.m.

Note: You need an access stamp or sticker for Lots P001–P010 and P354 (see "Lots That Require an Access Sticker" below).

Official Business supplement

An Official Business supplement is intended to facilitate parking access while conducting official university business only. Any improper display or other misuse of this supplement is prohibited and may result in confiscation of the document and/or a citation carrying a substantial fine.

This supplement is NEVER valid in disabled or reserved parking spaces. It is not intended to accommodate an individual’s personal parking needs. A valid UC San Diego parking permit with the OB supplement properly displayed allows parking in the following areas, subject to time limits detailed below:

  • Service yard spaces
  • Timed zones
  • UC vehicle spaces
  • Parking meters
  • Regular loading zones (excludes commercial loading zones)
  • V Visitor spaces

The following time limits apply:

  • R or A permits may park in spaces described above up to 4 hours.
  • B parking permits may park in spaces described above, A spaces, and where posted “A parking permit required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week" for up to 4 hours.

Use of this supplement implies that you understand and accept the responsibility associated with these regulations.

Lots That Require an Access Sticker

If you plan to park in the following lots during the hours listed, you must pick up and display an access stamp or sticker (no additional fee) that affixes to your UCSD parking permit.

Lots P001 – P010 (map)
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO)
  • 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily
  • SIO access stickers are available at the SIO Director's office to SIO affiliates only.
Lot P354 (map)
San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC)
  • 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays
  • SDSC access stickers are available at the SDSC reception desk to SDSC affiliates only.
Lot P384 (map)
Sanford Consortium for Regenerative Medicine
  • 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. weekdays
  • Access card also required 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays
  • Sanford Consortium access stickers and cards are only available at the Gilman Parking Office to UC San Diego employees who work at Sanford Consortium and purchase a UC San Diego parking permit.
Lot P416 (map)
International Center
  • 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. weekdays
  • International Center access stickers are available at the International Center reception desk to International Center affiliates only.
Service Yard spaces

Free parking

Paid parking is required year-round, even when classes are not in session.

However, you can park without charge during these off-peak hours (see Avoid Citations below for a list of spaces that are enforced daily):

  • Main campus – Parking is free all day in A, B, S, V, VP, and metered spaces on Saturdays, Sundays and university holidays, and from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays
  • Scripps Institution of Oceanography – Parking is free in A, B, and S spaces from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., 7 days a week
  • Medical Centers – Parking is free all day in A, B, and patient parking spaces on University holidays
  • Exceptions: Any exceptions to the above will be posted at parking.ucsd.edu. Otherwise, assume permits are required or contact parking enforcement, (858) 822-3379
