Find out how to send a UPS domestic package through UCSD Mail Services and charge the cost to your department index.

In the right place? If your UPS package weighs over 30 pounds, contains hazardous material, or contains items other than documents bound for a foreign destination, do not follow these instructions. UCSD Shipping must process the package.

1. Decide which UPS delivery service you want.

Choose from this list of available domestic services:

  • Next Day Air, delivery overnight by 10:30 a.m. to U.S. addresses
  • 2nd Day Air, delivery in two business days to U.S. addresses
  • 3 Day Select, delivery in three business days to U.S. addresses in the 48 contiguous states
  • Ground, delivery in five business days to U.S. addresses in the 48 contiguous states

Note: If you want to send your package to an international destination, see How to Send a UPS International Package.

2. Consider your insurance needs.

For an additional charge, you can insure your UPS package. In Step 5, list a declared value.

Tip: If you let UCSD Shipping send your package and complete a Shipping Memo, UCSD Risk Management covers your item through its transit insurance programs.

3. Get your UPS supplies.

Go to UCSD Mail Services Customer Supplies (PDF) and complete the online order form to get your free UPS supplies. If you need assistance to complete the form, see How to Order Mail Services Supplies.

Note: Most items will be delivered to you within 24 hours.

4. Complete the address labels.

Important: UPS does not ship to P.O. boxes.

Complete your own address labels using the following address formats:

Recipient address label sample:

JANE L MILLER
MILLER ASSOCIATES
STE 2006
1960 W CHELSEA AVE
ALLENTOWN PA 18104

Return address label sample:

JOHN E DOE
SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT 534-0000
MAIL CODE 0533

Note: Enclose a duplicate address label inside your package.

5. Prepare your UPS package.

Prepare your UPS package this way:

  • List the following information in the top right corner:
    • Delivery service desired
    • Index to be recharged
    • Declared value (if insurance desired)
  • Attach your return address label to the top left corner.
  • Attach your recipient address label in the center.
