Staff in Memoriam: Richard Sherman

Richard Lloyd Sherman
Senior Computer Operator
ACT

Years of service at UCSD: 25

Rick Sherman died suddenly June 17, 2009, at age 52. Originally from Astoria, NY, Rick graduated from La Jolla High School in 1976.

A loving father, husband, and son, Rick was looking forward to becoming a grandfather soon. According to colleagues, he was an "avid sports nut — if it was on TV, he watched it." He was also a chef — presumably to avoid doing dishes — and enjoyed golf and visiting casinos.

As a computer operator in Administrative Computing and Telecommunications (ACT), Rick was responsible for monitoring and troubleshooting online applications. "Rick was a good friend and confidant," noted Stephen Mariani, Rick's supervisor. "He helped me a lot when I first came to UCSD."

Co-worker Leonides Sayson added, "Rick will surely be missed. When I moved out here from Chicago back in 1999, Rick welcomed me with open arms and extended his friendship through the years. I will miss his laughter the most and miss hearing his stories about the casino."

Rick was blessed with many lifelong friends from high school and life. He is survived by his wife Kathy, daughter Natalie, son Martyn, and mother, Rosalba Sherman.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association.
