The University of California, San Diego is committed to a campus environment that fosters personal and institutional excellence. Therefore, I want to reiterate UCSD's commitment to a University community that is free from the problems of substance abuse and dependency. We want to ensure a safe and healthy University environment for all employees and students. Alcohol and drug use and abuse in communities throughout our country are causing personal tragedies and substantial economic loss. Therefore, we promote the choice not to use controlled substances or abuse alcohol.
Our employees and students are our most valued resource. They
are critical to sustaining our reputation of excellence and fulfilling our responsibilities for teaching, research, patient care, and public service. The UCSD Substance Abuse Program Guide is being provided to increase awareness of the problems associated with substance abuse, to outline related University policy, to describe resources available for assistance, to discuss each individual’s responsibility for compliance with University policy and consequences for noncompliance, and to comply with federal statutes.
We invite you to read and use the guide as a reference. I encourage each employee to be aware of the University’s policy on substance abuse and each student to be aware of the conduct code, and that the student conduct code and the University policy be displayed in prominent locations. Campus employees seeking assistance should contact the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program at (858) 534-5523. UCSD Medical Center Employee Assistance Services are available through the Managed Health Network at (888) 426-0023. Students should contact the Psychological and Counseling Services Office at (858) 534-3755 or the Student Safety Awareness Program Office at (858) 534-5793. The UCSD Medical Center Physician Well-Being Committee (PWBC) is a standing committee of the Medical Center Staff and, as such, is afforded confidentiality protection under California Evidence Code 1157. The main focus of the PWBC is to provide impaired practitioners with a nonpunitive avenue for addressing and resolving their impairments. Contact Chris Mathews, M.D., at pager # (619) 544-3704.
Please join me in making a commitment to a University community that is free of substance abuse.
