Commodity and account codes identify types of purchases. The information below will explain the link between commodity and account codes.
When you create a Department Order or a High Value Purchase Requisition, you'll be asked to select a commodity code and account code. They are used by the University to track its spending.
Commodity codes begin with a letter, followed by four or more numbers. Some commodity codes end in NON or INV to indicate non-inventorial and inventorial equipment.
Account codes are six digits. The first two digits denote either supplies and non-inventorial equipment (63XXXX) or inventorial equipment (64XXXX).
Each commodity code has one default account code associated with it. It may also have one or more alternate account codes. Once you have chosen the appropriate commodity code for your purchase, you can use the default account or one of the approved alternates.
For example, the commodity code L0120 (X-ray Film) has a default account code of 638010 (Medical Supplies). The approved alternate account code is 638042 (Lab Supplies). For most buyers, the default code for medical supplies is correct. But if you are buying X-ray film for your biology or physics lab, you would use the alternate account code for lab supplies.
