How to Dispose of Batteries at UCSD Medical Center (Hillcrest) and Thornton Hospital

Summary: If you are located at Thornton Hospital, or the UCSD Medical Center or Clinical Teaching Facility in Hillcrest, and you are not a Hazardous Waste Generator and do not have a Waste Generator Number (WGN), follow these procedures for used battery disposal. |

Determine the appropriate way to dispose of the battery: - Mail services
- Battery collection bin
- Hazardous waste collection request

- Use the mail services method in step 2
OR the battery collection bin method in step 3
if the following are true:- You are on a mail delivery route at Hillcrest or Thornton
- You do not have a Waste Generator Number
- The batteries are not leaking or corroded
- The package weighs less than 2 pounds
- If the batteries are leaking or corroded, place them in a plastic bag and seal it. Send a request for pickup to hazwaste@ucsd.edu. Include this information:
- Your name
- Phone number
- The quantity of batteries
- Building
- Room where the batteries are located
- If a battery weighs more than 2 pounds, send a request for pickup to hazwaste@ucsd.edu. Include this information:
- Your name
- Phone number
- The quantity of batteries
- Building
- Room number where the batteries are located

Steps for using mail services. |
- Cover the terminals with plastic nonconductive tape (Scotch® tape or electrical tape) to prevent the possibility of spark.
- Place the batteries in a sturdy envelope or container. Limit the package weight to 2 pounds or less.
- Address the package to "Used Batteries." No mail code is needed.
- At Thornton Hospital, either:
- Roll the package and place it in the mail tube chute.
OR
- Drop the package in the "campus" mail bin at the mail drop located in the Storehouse.
Note: Due to regulatory restrictions, only campus, SIO (La Jolla) and UCMC Hillcrest and Thornton may send batteries through mail services.

Steps for using battery collection bins.
Battery bin locations are designated by the Safety Office. New locations will be added on an as-needed basis.

- Place batteries in labeled collection bins. Locations are listed below.
Hillcrest Medical Center locations:
- Mail Center, 138 Dickinson
- Facilities Engineering Storehouse, 326 Dickinson
- Clinical Engineering, 355 Dickinson
West Wing, Room 415
Thornton Hospital locations (lower level):
- Storehouse, Room L-208, supply shelf
- Facilities Engineering/ Central Plant, Room L-311
- Clinical Engineering, Room L-119

Request pickup of full collection bins. |
- Send an e-mail requesting pickup to hazwaste@ucsd.edu. Include this information:
- Your name
- Phone number
- Building
- Room number where the container is located
