Summary: If your facility is located on campus or at SIO, and you are not a Hazardous Waste Generator and do not have a Waste Generator Number (WGN), follow these procedures for used battery disposal.

Note: SIO's Mt. Soledad and Point Loma operations should use satellite facility procedures.

What to do How to do it
1 Determine the appropriate way to dispose of the battery:
  • Mail services
  • Battery collection bin
  • Hazardous waste collection request
  1. Use the mail services method in step 2
OR the battery collection bin method in step 3
    if the following are true:
    • You are located on campus or at SIO (La Jolla)
    • You do not have a Waste Generator Number
    • The batteries are not leaking or corroded
    • The package weighs less than 2 pounds
  2. If the batteries are leaking or corroded, place them in a plastic bag and seal it. Send a request for pickup to hazwaste@ucsd.edu. Include:
    • Your name
    • Phone number
    • The quantity of batteries
    • Building

2 Steps for using campus mail services.
  1. Cover the terminals with plastic nonconductive tape (Scotch® tape or electrical tape) to prevent the possibility of spark.
  2. Place the batteries in a sturdy bag or container. Limit the package weight to 2 pounds or less.
  3. Address the package to "Used Batteries." No mail code is needed.
