Laser safety training is required for anyone working with class 3b or 4 lasers or laser systems, including laser operators and maintenance service personnel. Laser safety training is recommended for personnel working with class 1, 2, and 3a laser systems containing embedded class 3b or 4 lasers.
There are 2 ways to meet the UCSD training requirement:
Contact the EH&S Laser Safety Officer, (858) 822-2850, to schedule a training program.
Complete laser safety training on CD-ROM. Intended for non-medical laser users, an interactive CD-ROM training module is available by appointment only at the EH&S Services Lab, located in University Center 301-B (map). The program takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
- Call (858) 534-6418 to schedule an appointment during the lab's regular business hours, 1–4:30 p.m., weekdays.
Identify job-specific hazards, such as hazardous chemicals, and make sure employees attend safety training appropriate for the type of work they perform.
Instruct all personnel on safety procedures, personal protective equipment, and hazard controls specific to the laboratory and laser system in use, in addition to any training provided by the laser manufacturer.
- Document and keep records of all laser safety training, including a dated sign-in sheet for participants and a brief description of topics covered specific to their experiments.
Brief visitors on laser safety and provide them with protective equipment appropriate for their activities.
If you are a UCSD employee with questions, contact EH&S Laser Safety, (858) 822-2850.
