How to Participate in the Flexcar Program  
 
Summary: Learn about UCSD's car-sharing program.

Note: The following instructions are no longer accurate. The Flexcar program is currently unavailable because of Flexcar's recent merger with Zipcar. Transportation & Parking Services is working with Zipcar to provide car-sharing options and will provide more information about a UCSD Zipcar program as it is available.

Past Flexcar members can transition to Zipcar membership immediately to access Zipcars at UCSD; however, UCSD currently offers no free hours or discounted rates.

If you activate your Zipcar account, annual membership fees will be assessed on your original Flexcar membership anniversary. If you do not activate your Zipcar account, you will not be charged.

What to do How to do it
Determine if you are eligible to participate in the program. As a faculty or staff member, you can participate if you:
  • Are age 21 or older
  • Do not hold a UCSD parking permit
  • Work 20 hours per week or more
  • Have a valid driver's license
  • Have a good driving record:
    • Fewer than 3 accidents and moving violations in the last 3 years
    • No reckless or negligent driving, DWI, or DUI violations in the last 5 years

To receive 3 free hours and waived application and renewal fees, you must also be a member of Rideshare.


Apply for a Flexcar membership.

Complete Flexcar's online application. To complete the application, you will need to provide:
  • UCSD’s promotional code
    • Faculty and staff:
      • Rideshare members, use UCSDRide
      • Nonmembers, use UCSDFlex
    • Students:
      • Younger than 21, use UCSD18-20
      • 21 and older, use UCSDFlex
  • Your UCSD employee identification number
  • Your driver’s license number
    • If you have a Canadian or foreign/ international license, do not complete the online application. Contact the Flexcar office, (619) 262-3539.
  • Your local address
  • A current major credit card or debit card
Receive your membership confirmation. Within 7 days of your application's approval, you'll receive your membership packet, including your:
  • Flexcar member number
  • Personal identification number (PIN)
  • Flexcard, which serves as your key to operate Flexcars
  • Billing information

Note: You will not be able to reserve Flexcars until you receive your membership packet.


Reserve your vehicle. Flexcar members can reserve vehicles in one of 2 ways:
  1. Reserve online:
    • Log in with your member number and PIN
    • Use the drop-down menus to:
      • Choose a location
      • Choose a time
      • Confirm your reservation
  2. Reserve by phone:
    • Call (877) FLEX-CAR
    • Provide your member number, PIN, and vehicle location number
    • Make, extend, or cancel reservations

Pick up and drive your vehicle.
  • Find the vehicle. Your reservation confirmation provides detailed instructions and a map showing the car's location and transit route information.
  • Open the car. To unlock the doors, place your Flexcard over the card reader on the driver's side windshield.
  • Retrieve the key. Inside the car, enter your member number in the dashboard device and remove the ignition key from its slot in the glovebox.
  • Drive to your destination.
  • Park the vehicle in any red A, green B, yellow S, metered, or Service Yard space.

    Note: You may not park in reserved spaces or anywhere signs indicate that permits are required 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Return the vehicle.

Note: UCSD provides Rideshare members up to 3 free hours per month. If you exceed those hours, Flexcar will bill your credit card, itemizing the additional hours you drove, at an hourly rate of $8 for standard vehicles and $10 for premium vehicles.

After completing your business:
  • Return the car to the home parking space where you picked it up.
  • Replace the key. Place the green key fob on the key ring back into its slot in the glovebox.
  • Lock the car. After you step out of the car and remove all your belongings, swipe your Flexcard over the card reader on the windshield and wait for the doors to lock automatically. Swiping your Flexcard sends your trip data to the billing center and completes your trip.
