Flu Information for the UCSD Community

Summary: Consult this page for general information about reducing the spread of flu (influenza) on campus.

The best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each fall, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The best time to get a flu vaccine is early October to mid-November, before you feel flu symptoms.

Do your part to help prevent the spread of flu:

  • Get a flu shot:
    • Faculty and staff: If you're enrolled in UC-sponsored health plans, contact your individual health care providers for availability and instructions on obtaining flu shots under health plan provisions.
    • Students: See Immunizations at Student Health Services for information.
    • Flu Clinic Locator: You can also find a flu shot clinic by ZIP code, courtesy of the American Lung Association.
  • Stop the spread of germs:
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
    • Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough.
    • Print and post in your workplace this Cover Your Cough poster (PDF).
  • Practice good health habits to stay healthy during flu season:
    • Get plenty of sleep.
    • Be physically active.
    • Manage your stress.
    • Drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Recognize flu symptoms:

  • High fever (102° – 104°F)
  • Headache
  • General aches and pains
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Chest discomfort, cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea (much more common among children than adults)
  • Read Is It a Cold or the Flu? (PDF) for a comparison of symptoms.
  • If you think you have flu or a cold:
    • Stay home if you can't control your secretions.
    • Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and check with a health care provider as needed.
