Accepting Credit Cards: How to Process Payments

Summary: If your department accepts credit cards for goods or services, learn about different options for processing payments.
Processing method What to do
Through a terminal
  • You will need access to an analog telephone line near the terminal.
  • General Accounting will contact Chase Merchant Services to ship the terminal equipment directly to your location.
  • When you receive the terminal equipment, send the terminal ID and serial number for each device to Armando Carlsson, Mail Code 0953.
  • You must keep all terminal receipts locked up at all times in a limited-access site.
Through a secure Web site You have three choices for processing payments through a Web site:
  • Develop a Web site in-house. (You must meet hardware and software security requirements.)
  • Develop a Web site with a third-party processor. You must verify that third-party processors are PCI-certified before using them.
Using software that transmits transactions directly to Chase Merchant Services
  • This category typically describes point of sale (POS) or cash register software, such as ICVerify.
  • Visa and MasterCard don't yet have a plan for this type of software but plan for one in late 2005. Check this page for updates.
  • If you use this type of software, your department needs to follow data security measures.
