- Providing advice and guidance in carrying out the campus Radiation Safety Program

The Radiation Safety and Surveillance Committee (RSSC) advises the chancellor of the university through the vice chancellor of Business Affairs on all matters related to radiation safety and recommends such policies and procedures as it may deem appropriate to ensure an adequate radiation safety program.
The RSSC consists of at least 6 members appointed by the chancellor , and a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) experienced in the use of radioisotopes and in protection against ionizing radiation. Activities of the committee are directed by its chair. The chair of the RSSC shall be full time UCSD faculty member. The chair shall convene the Committee as often as is necessary to consider all aspects pertinent to radiation safety, and at least quarterly. A quorum shall consist of the chair, the RSO and 50% of the other members.
The RSSC has the ultimate responsibility for the use of radioactive material at UCSD and shall be the ultimate reviewing and authorizing agent for the use of all ionizing radiation. It shall set policy to be carried out by the Radiation Safety Officer. It shall receive and review all pertinent reports and records of the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) Department, the subcommittee minutes, and shall keep and maintain a record of all its transactions and reports. The RSSC shall consider the liabilities of the university in all activities involving radioisotopes.
