A virtual private network (VPN) is a private connection constructed over public networks. This helps protect computer data transmissions from being intercepted by using encryption and other security mechanisms. It also protects networks by ensuring only authorized users have access.
At UCSD, the Cisco VPN client software creates a virtual private connection from your off-campus computer. All network computing traffic between your remote machine and campus will pass over a single, encrypted connection, and your off-campus computer will have a UCSD IP address.
The benefits of using UCSD's VPN include:
- Your off-campus computer will appear to the UCSD network as though it is physically at UCSD (with a UCSD IP address). You will not need to use the Web proxy to access campus-restricted materials.
- Your communications with UCSD will be encrypted and less vulnerable. This protects your passwords and reduces the risk of its exposing sensitive data.
- You can access border-blocked ports, including the Microsoft services that UCSD blocks from non-VPN off-campus access.
To use the VPN, select your operating system below to find out how to register for VPN service, download the client software, and configure the client.
