Summary: In August 2001, the Staff Retention and Support Steering Committee (SRSSC) asked the Staff Education and Development Advisory Group to propose several initiatives to address staff training and development needs. See the table below for progress on the initiatives and related action items.
The Staff Education and Development Advisory Group addressed management and supervisory training and professional development for all UCSD community members in this role, improved access to training and professional development opportunities, and recommended organizational and personal commitment to professional development. The group also explored backup and cross-training strategies.
    Initiative: Offer an orientation program for academic and staff leaders (VII.1.)
What is it? When is it? Why is it important?
Create a UCSD orientation program for new and existing supervisors. Implemented on a pilot basis, with a second pilot program planned for February 2005. The program orients supervisors to the principles, policies, resources, and best practices of supervising at UCSD.
    Initiative: Create academy for academic leadership development (VII.2.)
What is it? When is it? Why is it important?
Develop a UCSD program for academic supervisors. In March 2003, Academic Affairs initiated a program for academic department heads. These programs will support the University’s goal of having well-prepared academic leaders who understand the implications of legal issues, policy, and sound management practices.
    Initiative: Develop standard for effective supervision (VII.3.)
What is it? When is it? Why is it important?
Communicate UCSD’s expectations for effective supervision. March 2005 Leaders and managers will know the organization’s expectations for effective supervision and will be accountable via the performance management and appraisal process.
    Initiative: Deliver a new professional development offering for select professional and support staff positions (VII.4.)

Develop and deliver a half-day on-campus program. Implemented and ongoing The UCSD Administrative Professionals Development Program provides a unique, campuswide professional development program for administrative support staff.
    Initiative: Implement performance appraisal orientation program and tools (VII.5.)
What is it? When is it? Why is it important?
Develop and deliver program for orienting faculty and staff supervisors on performance appraisal program. Implemented Supports leaders, managers, and supervisors in the use of UCSD’s performance appraisal process and tools, with emphasis on the value and benefits to their staff and departments.
